Keratin Curiosities
What is a keratin treatment?
Hey everyone! I’ve gotten a lot of questions about keratin treatments. What they are? Who they are used on? Is it good for you? So I thought I’d write a blog to give you the answers to your questions. I hope this clears things up and for some be discovery for great solution for any hair troubles you’re having.
Frizzy hair, the struggle is real and keratin treatment is the real solution.
Let’s first answer the question, what exactly is Keratin? Keratin is a key structural protein found in our hair, skin and nails. It is strong and delicate. For animals, for example, a horses hooves are made up of keratin. Throughout life, exposure to pollution, chemicals, hair products, and even blow drying, can all be part of depleting the natural keratin of your hair. First the outer layers gets worn and becomes damaged. This effects the inner hairs cortex and keeps diminishing and affecting new cells because they no longer have the outer protection. It is a downward spiral from there. The natural ware and tear to your hair results in losing its natural shine and straightness. This is where a keratin treatment steps in. The treatment is a semi-permanent hair smoothing system that smooths and adds shine to your hair. It actually smooths down the rough damaged cuticle and adds keratin protein that has diminished back into your hair. It literally brings back the molecular components that your hair needs and enables the protection to the inner cells once again. It’s a Win-Win!
Who could benefit from a keratin treatment?
Keratin treatments is perfect for anyone with course, thick, curly, frizzy hair. Anyone with that “do what it wants” unruly hair. Most of my clients seeking this treatment struggle the most with frizz.
A keratin treatment may be perfect for you if:
You have that “Do what it wants” unruly hair.
Battle that summer halo of frizz.
Coarse hair that you can’t get silky no matter how many passes with a flatiron.
Curly hair that you would like more smooth and less frizz.
Tighter curls that you would like more straight or straighten out curls completely.
How long do keratin treatments last?
Keratin treatments lasts about six months. The best part about this is that the keratin treatment is a semi-permanent service. Which mean that around the six month mark, you will notice your hair going back to its normal texture instead of having re-growth at the top of your head. That is when you will know it’s time for another treatment, if you choose.
Are keratin treatments bad?
At my hair salon, we use Peter Coppola Complex Keratin Treatment. Not all keratin treatments are created equal. Some keratin treatments contain harmful chemicals. I’m sure, through here say, you have heard conflicting information about keratin treatments containing toxic chemicals. Way back in the day, this discovery of keratin treatment was founded through using chemicals such as formaldehyde, thus raised questions about toxicity of its use. Especially once heated agents such ingredients like aldehyde, at certain levels, can transform to formaldehyde. In the 90’s they battled that out and solutions were needed. I did much research and Coppola keratin treatment was the one who took finding an organic solution the most serious. Thankfully they did find a alternative! There benign antioxidant alternative is patented in France, and the solution acts as an organic preservative and is not harmful. I was so happy to discover the best option possible that is safe, natural and organic for my clients, and for myself to work with.
What kind of keratin treatment do I offer?
This may sound redundant because I explained above, but just in case your skimming, I’ll keep up with all the questions you may have. I specifically only use the Peter Coppola keratin treatment. It is not only formaldehyde free, it is also aldehyde free. Which means you and I will not be breathing in any harmful chemicals. I’ve worked with this brand for many years now and myself and my clients have been more than please with the results. Super smooth and shiny hair for six months! Who’s not happy with that?
Here is a video from Peter Coppola himself explaining a little about the product.
What can I expect my appointment to entail and what should I expect as far as cost?
The Peter Coppola keratin treatment starts with a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess oils from the hair. We get all the elements out of your hair, so that your hair is purified to its natural state. Then your hair is blown dry and we begin the application of the keratin treatment. Applying the product to every part of your hair takes about an hour. The treatment then stays in your hair and processes for about another hour. This varies based on texture, density, damage and porosity of the hair. Next, your hair is rinsed for about five minutes. At last, the hair is blown dry again. From here, I use a flatiron and take your hair in very small sections and seal the keratin into the hairs cuticle. I work through your entire head of hair, ensuring the seal happens everywhere, which takes roughly an hour. Walking out the door with beautiful, shining, straight hair takes altogether about 3 hours. After the appointment the hair must not be washed for 48 hours to ensure the keratin is locked into the cuticle of the hair. If you can’t wait to wash, a dry shampoo can always be an option. When it comes time to wash I recommend using a sulfate free shampoo. I carry R+Co products and all of their products are sulfate free. They are also all vegetarian, cruelty-free, gluten-free and color-safe. I recommend Atlantis as my favorite shampoo for keratin treated hair. Not only is it is great for thick, coarse or moisture-deprived hair, it has a wonderful fragrance. It is a spirited scent of bergamot, wild fig, cyclamen, lotus flower, cedarwood, and tonka beans. Lastly, prices for Peter Coppola keratin treatments start at $350 and go up from there based on length and density of hair. On average, $60 a month is the cost for straight frizz-free hair and you only need one appointment, freeing up your schedule from planning for monthly visits and more time for you.
At the end of the appointment, you walk out of the salon with a smile on your face, straight wavy hair flowing and feeling good about yourself!
I hope this helped you with any questions you have about keratin treatments. What it boils down to is, if you want smooth frizz-free hair without all the chemical, you should absolutely opt for the Peter Coppola keratin treatment. Give your hair the day sap day it deserves!
